Thai Rak Thai dissolved, ex-premier Thaksin banned from politics

   Posted by:    in Uncategorized

Wednesday, May 30, 2007

Thailand’s former ruling party, Thai Rak Thai, was found guilty of election fraud by a Constitutional Tribunal, and ordered to be dissolved. Its former leader, ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra and 110 party leaders are banned from politics for five years, the court also ruled.

Thaksin, responding to the ruling from London, told the BBC: “We have to respect the rules of the game. That is, the rule of the law. If the rules of the law are observed, we have to respect it.”

But Thaksin’s lawyer and spokesman in Bangkok, Noppadon Pattama, called the verdict “unexpected”, and told Reuters, “It’s too harsh on Thai Rak Thai.”

Earlier, the nation’s main opposition party, the Democrat Party, was acquitted of six charges of election fraud, and allowed to remain intact.

The tribunal was reviewing violations that took place during the April 2, 2006 general elections, which were declared invalid due to widespread charges of corruption and vote buying. Another election was scheduled for October 2006, but after a military-led coup on September 19, that election was never held.

Thai Rak Thai (literally “Thais love Thais”), was formerly headed by Thaksin, a telecommunications tycoon and ex-prime minister who was ousted in last year’s coup.

The tribunal said two party leaders, former deputy leader Thamarak Isarangura and former deputy secretary-general Pongsak Ruktapongpisal, hired two smaller parties to contest the April election on behalf of Thai Rak Thai. The two were Cabinet members at the time. The Tribunal also dissolved the two implicated smaller parties, Pattana Chart Thai and Pandin Thai, and banned their executives from politics for five years.

Thai Rak Thai lawyers countered that the party’s top leadership could not have known about Thamarak and Pongsak’s plans, but the judges dismissed that assertion.

“The Thai Rak Thai party did not respect the rule of law despite the fact that they won elections twice,” said one of the judges in his ruling. “Thai Rak Thai cannot exist as a political party, therefore the court orders to dissolve the Thai Rak Thai party.”

Thai Rak Thai acting leader Chaturon Chaisang said that the ban was “totally unexpected”, but he urged supporters to not fight the decision. “Even if we don’t agree with the ruling, I ask all Thai Rak Thai members not to protest or oppose the ruling,” he said.

The final verdict was read at 11:36 p.m. local time (1636 GMT), and came after a long, suspenseful afternoon and evening of proceedings that began at 2 p.m. The proceedings were broadcast on all of Thailand’s television channels, and local newspapers updated their coverage in real time on their websites.

In the run-up to what was called “Judgement Day” in the local media, tensions were high. Interim Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont warned that he would impose a state of emergency if there was any violence. Thousands of security officers were stationed at checkpoints across the capital, with a 15,000-strong security force at the ready in their barracks. The junta also ordered that some political websites be blocked. King Bhumibol Adulyadej made a rare televised address when he granted an audience to the court’s judges, and urged them to use care in their deliberations.

Some schools were closed out of security concerns, but there were no signs of large protests. Fewer than 200 people gathered quietly behind police barricades across the road from the court, and parties kept their supporters away from the site.

The Democrat Party faced six charges, among them accusations that it had paid off members of two smaller parties, the Progressive Democrat Party and the Better Life Party, to frame Thai Rak Thai of trying to buy their votes. But the Democrats were acquitted on all charges.

“The facts cannot prove that the Democrats did any wrongdoing so there is no reason to dissolve the Democrats,” said Thanit Kesawapitak, one of nine tribunal judges.

However, the Progressive Democratic Party was found guilty of rigging its membership records, and ordered dissolved. Furthermore, the party’s leaders are banned from politics for five years. The party was found guilty of falsifying its membership records to enable its candidates to run in three constituencies in Trang.

Democrat Party members sitting in the court room appeared to be relieved as they heard the verdict read.

At the Democrats’ headquarters, the mood was celebratory. Crowds lined the streets to the offices, and leaders were greeted with cheers and applause and given bouquets of flowers.

“Today’s victory is for people and the country,” Democrat leader Abhisit Vejjajiva told supporters. “Today is the end of pressure on the party and the people. What I wish from is that the Council of National Security and the government holds the national election as promised and as scheduled,” he said.

The Council of National Security, the junta’s ruling body, has promised a national referendum on a new constitution, with elections by December.

The Democrat Party is Thailand’s oldest political party, founded in 1945, and has mainly been an opposition party. With Chuan Leekpai as prime minister, the Democrats led coalition governments from 1992 to 1995 and again from 1997 to 2001, when Thaksin and Thai Rak Thai were swept to power on a tide of populist sentiment. Since being ousted in last year’s coup, Thaksin has lived in self-imposed exile outside Thailand, mainly in London.

Now, with Thai Rak Thai removed from the scene, the Democrats are likely to return to power if the promised elections are held, said Michael Montesano, who teaches Thai politics at the National University of Singapore.

When your pregnancy is over, weight loss might be a problem. There are some things that work against you then. You’ll likely feel stressed and sleep deprived. Establishing time for your own good habits might seem very hard. It’s a good idea to add healthy lifestyle changes before, during and after your pregnancy to stay healthy and keep your weight on an even keel. Luckily, these changes can improve your life and make it simpler for you and the baby.

To help you sleep better while you are pregnant, plan your fluid intake around your smaller bladder capacity. Drink plenty of water during daylight hours, but watch how much you take in prior to going to sleep. This will keep you from waking yourself up to use the bathroom.

Relax before bedtime and use pillows to make your pregnant body more comfortable while sleeping. Your body will be more aware of it being sleep time if you have a regular routine each night. Try soothing rituals such as a warm shower, reading a short story, or having a shoulder massage.

In order to avoid having trouble falling to sleep while you are pregnant, establish a nightly routine to prepare for bedtime. Have a routine that is consistent at night so your body will be better equipped to sleep well. This routine should include sleep-promoting activities such as reading, a hot shower, and shoulder massages.

If you do not feel well while you are pregnant, you should not hesitate to decline any invitations to social events. People will understand that this is a trying time and you may not be able to keep up socially. You will be tired and nauseous much of the time. Do not push your body to its limits if it does not have to be.

Are you having pregnancy cravings? Often, your body may actually need the food that you are having strong cravings for. You can enjoy having cravings because you know that you need the extra calories for your baby.

If you’re pregnant, you should never be shy to ask for assistance in lifting heavy things. Japan asks “Where’s the beef?”

   Posted by:    in Uncategorized

Tuesday, March 29, 2005

Shortages of beef in Japan prompted consumers to submit a petition with about 1.19 million signatures to Japan’s Agriculture Minister Yoshinobu Shimamura on Tuesday. The petition was presented by a group led by Takashi Sakamoto, president of a chain of used book outlets.

Japan has banned imports of U.S. beef for 15 months, citing concerns about mad cow disease after authorities discovered a cow with the disease in the United States.

Japanese health and agriculture ministers said they would ask their country’s food safety commission to approve lifting the ban.

“We will ask the commission to decide if resuming U.S. beef imports is safe based on safety measures taken in the U.S.,” said health minister Makoto Kanie.

Analyst Kazuhiko Saito says this may cause a delay “until later this year”, telling Bloomberg, “The Commission has been very slow on reviewing domestic mad cow tests and will also be slow to review the U.S. beef import plans.”

U.S. lawmakers and diplomats have pressed Japan to re-open their market, and some Washington lawmakers have even threatened Japan with sanctions should beef imports not resume soon. US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice brought up the matter earlier this month during her visit to Japan.

So far, the Japan Food Safety Commission has only taken the step of loosening inspection rules, such that mad cow testing is not required for all imported live cattle.

Japan has dealt with 14 cases of mad cow disease of their own.

Reverse Mortgages Fa Qs

The Home Equity Conversion Mortgage (HECM) is a reverse mortgage program offered by FHA, which allows senior citizens aged 62 and older the option to withdraw some of the equity they have in their home. Some senior citizens find reverse mortgages appealing as a supplement to Social Security or to meet unexpected medical expenses. Here is some information about reverse mortgages that will help you decide if a reverse mortgage could benefit you.

What is a reverse mortgage?

A reverse mortgage is a mortgage offered by the Federal government to senior citizens age 62 and over through a program overseen by HUD. Reverse mortgages allow homeowners to borrow a portion of the equity they have in their home by taking a lump sum payment, monthly payments, as a line of credit or in some cases a combination of all three. The homeowner is not obligated to repay the loan until the homeowner dies or the homeowner discontinues living in the home.

How is a reverse mortgage different from a conventional mortgage?

In a conventional mortgage the homeowner makes a monthly payment to the lender and some portion of the payment goes towards equity and the remaining portion goes towards interest paid for the loan. When the loan begins a higher percentage of each payment goes towards interest but over time the portion of the payment allocated to interests decreases until the loan is finally paid of. With a reverse mortgage the homeowner has no required monthly payments. All interest that accrues over the life of the loan is added to mortgage balance and paid off after the homeowner dies.

What are the requirements for getting a reverse mortgage?

In order to qualify for a reverse mortgage the homeowner must:

1. Be 62 years old or older

2. Live in the home

3. Own the home free and clear (or have a small mortgage left on the home that can be paid off with the proceeds from the reverse loan)

What types of homes are eligible for reverse mortgages?

Only single family homes, duplexes, triplexes, quadplexes, and HUD approved condominiums/ manufactured homes that meet FHA requirements are eligible.

At the end of the day deciding whether or not to take advantage of the reverse mortgage program is a personal decision that varies with each individual’s unique circumstances. Reverse mortgages are tricky but can be beneficial in certain situations. Obviously the decision requires some serious analysis before any commitments are made. There are many websites on the internet that can help you assess the pros and cons of reverse mortgages and even to calculate whether or not a reverse mortgage makes sense for you. If you still feel uneasy you can seek the advice of a mortgage or real estate expert who will be able to run numbers and provide an exhaustive analysis of the costs and benefits of reverse mortgages. Finally, more information about the Home Equity Conversion Mortgage (HECM) is available on the FHA and HUD websites.

Crucifixes can be displayed in state schools, European court rules

   Posted by:    in Uncategorized

Saturday, March 19, 2011

File:European court of human rights.JPG

The Strasbourg-based European Court of Human Rights ruled unanimously yesterday that state school classrooms displaying crucifixes do not violate the rights of non-Catholic pupils.

In a reversal of the unanimous November 2009 decision the court said, although the crucifix is “above all a religious symbol”, it is an “essentially passive symbol” and there is no evidence crucifixes displayed on classroom walls influence pupils.

The court’s final ruling reverses their 2009 decision in a case brought by a Finnish-born mother living in Italy who objected to the Roman Catholic symbols in her children’s classrooms on the grounds that they violated the secular principles state schools should uphold. The court agreed, saying the crucifix might be “emotionally disturbing for pupils of other religions or those who profess no religion”. But the decision created a vociferous outcry in many European countries, such as Italy, which argued the crucifix is a cultural symbol, and a part of Europe’s culture and history.

The appeal was handled by New York University legal scholar Joseph Weiler, arguing extreme secularism could threaten the use of British national anthem God Save the Queen.

Italy’s foreign minister, Franco Frattini, welcomed the reversal. According to the newspaper La Repubblica he said, “The decision underlines, above all, the rights of citizens to defend their own values and their own identities. I hope that following this verdict Europe will begin to examine issues of tolerance and religious freedom with the same courage.”

Friday’s ruling is binding on the 47 countries that are members of the Council of Europe, the continent’s monitor of human rights, paving the way for petitions to other governments to allow religious symbols in schools for those who want them.

Volkswagen History

Levi Quinn

Volkswagen is a German auto maker that is very well known to many people throughout the world. One of the vehicles that helped make them a household name is the Beetle. It may not come as a surprise to many that the Volkswagen got started in part by Adolf Hitler. Though he did not drive, he asked Ferdinand Porsche to create a vehicle that would be suitable for the regular everyday working man. Porsche agreed to do it and within a few years the Volkswagen Beetle made its debut.

A new factory was built for Volkswagen soon after in 1938. The war began soon after this and the factory never did produce many cars before it got underway. Only one vehicle was released and it was given to Hitler for his birthday. In 1945 the factory was actually bombed by the Americans. It was then given to the British to control. The British decided that they would use the factory for their military vehicles. Army officer Major Hirst was in charge. It is because of him that Volkswagen survived to become a business once again. After painting one of the factorys cars green and sending it to Britain, a response came requesting 20,000 more.

When the year 1946 ended the factory was pumping out 1000 cars per month. However, the building became damaged and exposed to the elements so production soon came to a gradual halt. The factory was offered to other existing auto manufacturers at the time though nobody wished to claim it. A funny fact to many is that the owner of the Rootes car corporation told Hirst that he would be a fool to continue trying to make a car as ugly and noisy as the Beetle. Yet today the Beetle remains and Rootes has been finished for many years.

Volkswagen did attempt to make other vehicles back in the 1960s. They made a vehicle called the Thing which was reminiscent of a war vehicle. It was large and rather unattractive. It was only sold for two years in the United States before being discontinued. Volkswagen spent a lot of time and money looking at ways to improve the Beetle. In 1973 Volkswagen was getting into deep financial trouble and was facing the possibility of having to discontinue the Beetle indefinitely.

It wasnt long after that Volkswagen released both the Passat and the Rabbit. Both cars had a substantial amount of success and have continued to be popular vehicles in the modern day. The Volkswagen Golf was sold as the Rabbit in the U.S. during the 1980s but was later changed back to Golf. It is now once again called the Rabbit. Volkswagen has continued to reclaim success with cars like the Jetta and the new Beetle that has been given a modern twist on an old classic.

Volkswagen is now looking at making some earth friendly vehicles. They have teamed up with Sanyo to find a way to create a hybrid vehicle battery system. Volkswagen has made its way through history to be a successful competitor that is still standing.
