Bull fighting banned in Catalonia

   Posted by:    in Uncategorized

Wednesday, July 28, 2010

The parliament of Catalonia, an autonomous region of Spain, today voted to outlaw bullfighting – an iconic sport in much of the country. The vote was held after animal rights activists, led by Catalonian animal rights group Prou! (Catalan for “Enough!”), who claim the practice is “barbaric”, collected 180,000 signatures to a petition.

In other areas, such as Portugal and southern France, the bulls, which are specially bred for fighting, are not killed in the ring.

The ban, which passed with a 68–55 majority and nine abstentions, will come into force in Catalonia in January 2012, making the region the first place in mainland Spain to outlaw the practice. Supporters of the practice claim that it is an art form which forms an important part of the Spanish culture, and fear that the ban could be the first of many in Spain. They also say that many jobs would be lost as a result of the ban, with estimates that it could cost €300 million in lost revenue.

Both the main parties in the Catalan parliament took the unusual step of allowing their members a free vote in the debate, which saw high emotions on both sides. The debate was officially over the animal welfare concerns; however, many believe that the underlying issue of Catalan nationalism played a significant part in the outcome. Some expressed the opinion that Catalonia, which, while officially part of Spain, has its own language and flag, was attempting to distinguish itself from the rest of Spain by outlawing one of its most famous traditions.

Iraqi journalist throws shoes at US president George Bush

   Posted by:    in Uncategorized

Sunday, December 14, 2008

An Iraqi journalist for an Egyptian Newspaper named Muntazer al-Zaidi was tackled by authorities after he threw his shoes at United States president George W. Bush during a press conference on Sunday in Baghdad. Bush had made a surprise last visit to Iraq to sign a new security pact brokered by Iraq and the U.S.

Before throwing his shoes at Bush, the reporter, Muntader al-Zaidi of Al-Baghdadia, a local television station, stood up and said, “This is a farewell kiss from the Iraqi people, dog!” The words were followed by the reporter’s two shoes being thrown at Bush, who had to duck in order to avoid being hit with them. Shortly after each shoe flew within a few inches of Bush, authorities quickly neutralized the reporter and took him out of the room.

In Arabic culture, hitting or throwing shoes at someone so the soles hit them is considered a great insult. In 2003, when Iraqi citizens tore down the statue of Saddam Hussein in downtown Baghdad, they began to smack it with the soles of their shoes.

Despite the incident, the press conference continued with some reporters apologizing for the man’s actions. It even appeared that Bush was smiling, as the shoes flew past his head.

“Thanks for apologizing on behalf of the Iraqi people. It doesn’t bother me. If you want the facts, it was a size 10 shoe that he threw,” said Bush in regards to the incident who also said that he didn’t feel threatened.

The United States space agency NASA has put off the launch of Mars Science Laboratory rover mission. It was scheduled to fly next year, but the mission has been delayed by testing and hardware problems.

According to agency officials, the launch of the rover would be postponed until 2011. The delay could add US$400 million to the cost of the mission, which is likely to be higher than $2 billion.

“We will not lessen our standards for testing the mission’s complex flight systems, so we are choosing the more responsible option of changing the launch date,” said Dough McCuistion, the director NASA’s Mars program.

Depending upon the type of student you were, your college experience was either filled with stress, studying and the excitement of reaching new learning vistas – or it was filled with beer, parties, and hanging out with lots of members of the opposite sex.

Either way, it is a fact that you – like all college students – had to come up with a way to pay for the whole experience. Whether you attended a less expensive state school as an in-state resident or whether you went to a fancy-schmancy private university, your student loans likely run into the tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The reality of having to repay all of those loans hits most grads at one of the worst-possible times: just a few months after graduation. Just when you are faced with the need to find a job, get an apartment, and generally get your post-college life on track, you get hit with your first student loan bill.

Things can even be worse if you have multiple loans, given that you are having to manage multiple payments at once.

However, for those with multiple loans, there is a bright side: you are likely to be eligible for private student loan consolidation.

Who Qualifies For Private Student Loan Consolidation?

If you have more than one student loan through a private lender (i.e., not the federal government but rather through a private bank), you are eligible to consolidate your student loans through a private consolidation lender.

You should consider consolidating if you are less than half-way through your repayment period, if you want to reduce your monthly payments, and/or if you believe your credit score has improved since your initial loans were received.

How Your Consolidation Loan Interest Rate Is Determined?

For private loans, your consolidation loan interest rate is determined by a combination of the going prime rate – or other major right like the LIBOR – and your credit score. Of course, your private lender will have some discretion as to your new interest rate, which is precisely why it pays to shop your rate around with multiple lenders.

3 Steps To Finding The Best Bank For Student Loan Consolidation

Here are 3 steps to finding the best bank for private student loan consolidation:

1. Start with a list of at least 3-5 banks: Do your research online to get together a list of at least 3 to 5 banks who specialize in private student loan consolidation. Remember, it is very unlikely that your first offer will be your best, so by researching multiple banks you will have a much better chance of potentially saving thousands of dollars in interest over the life of your loan.

2. Visit their websites: These days, there is nothing like the Internet in terms of conducting efficient, fast and comprehensive research. Start with each company’s website. If you like one or more sites and have the time, order an information packet through the mail.

3. Apply to at least 3 of them: Once you have found at least 3 lenders you like based upon your research, apply to all of them. When the offers start rolling in, be sure to wait for all of the offers before making a decision.

Follow these tips in order to find the best bank for your private loan consolidation.

Why I am a Green Party member and candidate.

I joined the Green Party in Oakville because that’s where I choose to live now, close to family. I’ve never been a party member before. The Green Party is the only internationally connected party which is ready, and able, to take positive action to clean up our world. It was essential for me to join and start doing my part in the redesigning of the future.

I think it’s a good thing that I have had no prior political experience; the Green Party is re-inventing the word ‘politician’.

Many people distrust today’s politicians. They are seen as people who talk but do not listen; as people who promise but do not deliver on those promises. The Green Party is developing leaders who will be advocates working in partnership with people everywhere to heal our over-stressed world.

I have functioned as a: speaker/leader/guide/advocate/feminist/pacifist/teacher/pastor in previous careers and I am not afraid of any opponents because I intend to follow the example of our Green Party Federal leader, Elizabeth May, and always speak the truth to the best of my knowledge.

In my opinion the three most important issues here in Oakville are:

a. controlling urban sprawl

b. preserving what we have in a fiscally responsible way

c. educating local people so that they conserve energy, support local industry, but think globally.

These goals reflect Green Party policy.

I will use all possible resources of The Green Party of Ontario to promote these ends and as well, day by day, change the way I live. I must lead by example and walk the walk or I can’t say that I am Green.

I am part of local environmental groups fighting to control development and conserve green space. I give financial support to The Sierra Club, The Council of Canadians, Amnesty International, and The David Suzuki Foundation. I support women’s shelters and palliative care centers. I utilize alternative remedies to safeguard my own health. I write letters to politicians at all levels of government to speak against unwise decisions.

But, I am determined to be a less wasteful consumer.

Here are some examples of changes I am making:

This list is just a small sample of the many, many things I know I need to do in order to help save our planet.

The first order of business in the 39th Legislative Assembly should be to declare to the people of Ontario that everyone in the house must pledge to work together to assure a clean environment for all species on our planet and a sustainable future for our children.

I think Oakville taxes are where they should be; we are served well. As far as stimulating new jobs is concerned Ontario should work at creating “green jobs”, that is jobs which will allow our province to manufacture fuel-efficient vehicles, wind turbines, better public transit, sustainable agriculture and forestry, eco-tourism, energy-efficient materials and construction. I think we should pay for what we burn, not what we earn. All these ideas have been put forward in the Green Party of Ontario platform paper.

We will have a more participatory democracy if we change the way we vote and adopt Mixed Member Proportional representation. Government of the people, for the people, by the people is the cornerstone of Green Party policy.

The new media does not figure greatly in my campaign; face-to-face dialogue is more important to the Green Party. As well, not everyone can afford to have internet service nor do they have the time to surf the web. However I wish that all citizens of Ontario would take the time to go on-line to: www.gov.on.ca. By doing so every person would know exactly when our leaders are being fiscally responsible and, likewise, when they are letting us down.

By going through this exercise myself I have come to the conclusion that the best thing Ontario’s 38th Legislative Assembly did was to dedicate a Ministry of Health Promotion to advocate healthy living and programs that prevent illness and promote wellness. The Green Party is very keen to promote prevention in the area of health care in order to save millions to say nothing of heading off the advance of our current cancer epidemic.

One of the least helpful choices of this same Assembly was that of continuing to allow Separate School funding in this province despite the condemnation of the UN Human Rights Committee twice (in 1999 and 2005) for violating the equality of its own citizens by funding Roman Catholic schools but NOT schools of other religions. We must have only ONE school system: the public school system.

We need to build tolerance as well as establish progressive social policies; we must widen the opportunity for every citizen to participate in democracy.

The Green Party believes very strongly in ALL these principles.

It was hard to extract enough material for an article, to the extent I even looked up WN:LENGTH to satisfy myself. The Miss Austria website is in German, naturally, but it’s not too taxing. Only three things are sourced here;

Incidentally, a bug in {{sources}} is messing with the URL. BRS (Talk) (Contribs) 19:32, 22 October 2015 (UTC)
