Australian Manns Mitre 10 hardware store closes after rent dispute

   Posted by:    in Uncategorized

Sunday, January 27, 2013

Wednesday, an over-90-year-old Manns Mitre 10 hardware store, run by Alex P Mann Pty Ltd, closed until further notice after a rent dispute in Port Adelaide, South Australia. The rent dispute involved $315,060.70 of rent for months of September 2012 to January 2013 unpaid to the landlord, Fourteen Sails Pty Ltd. The site was distrained. The store had to fire about 40–50 employees without a warning in advance.

The store was closed three days before Australia Day, January 26, Saturday.

The store administrator, Tim Clifton, said they had to ring the workers out of the blue: “I was advised the landlord had distrained for unpaid rent over the business and that left the directors in the position where the business was untenable. I presume at this stage trading was poor and the company just didn’t have the money to pay the rent. … Unfortunately they had to terminate their employment this morning and we’ve rung them all. We’ll do our best to get them their entitlements under the government schemes, and we calculate what they’re owed in the next few days and hopefully get that underway for them. … It’s a sad day. It’s a sign of the times isn’t it. Things are tough out there.”

Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union state secretary Dave Kirner said workers were not allowed to collect their personal belongings left inside of the store: “I spoke with a worker who said the locks have been changed, they were asked to leave and all their personal belongings are in there”.

On Saturday, Wikinews took photos of the documents available at the store entrance. The rent dispute details and an inventory were available for everyone to read. During the ten minutes of taking photos, around seven people visited the closed entrance and read the documents a first time. One of them commented, “oh hey, Bunnings will be stronger”.

The store owner, Jarred Spearman, reported negotiations ongoing with the landlord and said he would “hopefully try to work [our] way out of this … We are pretty lucky to have the customers and staff we had”.

Port Adelaide Mayor Gary Johanson said the loss of the store is a significant loss as Port Adelaide is being redeveloped: “Their staff were extremely good, the service levels were high, the store was always well stocked and it was a great example of a family business. That will be a great loss to the Port.” “The landlord is not at fault here. The landlord is acting within their rights. … This is the sort of thing we cannot afford to lose if we’re serious about the Port being redeveloped. This is not a multinational company. This is a franchise of a bigger company but it is a family franchise and it employs a lot of staff. The staff that they employ are local people and they’re employing large amounts of staff in relation to their turnover. We need to take stock of what local businesses we have left and say, how can we ensure they stay with us?”

Two San Diego art museums receive $40 million art collection

   Posted by:    in Uncategorized

Sunday, March 25, 2012

Two museums in San Diego, California have been bequested an art collection worth more than $40 million. The art collection was donated by Dr. Vance E. Kondon and Elisabeth Giesberger to both the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego and the San Diego Museum of Art.

Kondon, a former board member of the Museum of Contemporary Art, died in 1997 and Giesberger died in 2011. Kondon was a notable art collector in San Diego, and collected for over 30 years. Roxana Velásquez, SDMA executive director, described their bequeathed collection’s “rarity” and said the pieces would add “depth” to the two existing museum collections.

The collection will be separated between the two museums due to the art movements represented within it. The Museum of Contemporary Art will receive 30 contemporary works by artists such as Franz Kline, Christo, and Craig Kauffman. The Museum of Art was bequeathed 48 German Expressionist paintings, drawings and prints. This collection includes artworks by Otto Dix, Gustav Klimt, and Egon Schiele.

by

Elena Vincent

If you are looking for information on how to improve egg quality for IVF, there are a number of steps you can take to ensure that your eggs are in tip-top condition when it comes round to the time for collection.

Although there is no doubt that ovarian health is affected by age, this is not the only factor and there is much which impacts on the health of the ovaries and eggs and much we can do to influence them to our advantage. The relevant factors include, amongst others, our diet, environmental factors, hormonal issues and stress.

Prior to ovulation, there is a lot going on in respect of our eggs. Indeed, the production cycle begins 90 days before ovulation and during this time, a multitude of things can both positively and negatively affect egg quality. During this time, eggs are affected by blood flow, the hormones flowing through our bodies, what we eat and stress.

* Blood Flow

It is important that our ovaries have a good blood supply which is rich in oxygen. Poor blood flow can be the result of lack of exercise, dehydration and thicker blood. To counteract this, ensure that you drink at least 2 liters of water each and every day. You should also try to find a form of exercise which you enjoy, but think moderate rather than strenuous. Exercise helps the blood to pump round the body, thus increasing the flow of oxygen to our vital organs. Some forms of massage have also been shown to help improve the blood supply to the ovaries.

* Hormones

When looking at how to improve egg quality for IVF, hormonal balance should not be overlooked. This can be affected by so many things, including environmental toxins, stress and diet. When hormones are out of kilter, this can disrupt ovulation. Hormones can be rebalanced by eliminating environmental toxins by way of a thorough detox and reducing your future exposure. Ensure that you eat foods which have been produced organically.

* Diet

What we eat impacts tremendously on our health and specifically, the right kinds of foods can improve egg quality for IVF. Foods to help improve egg health include full fat dairy products, royal jelly, broccoli, berries, pumpkin seeds, halibut, sesame seeds, dark green leafy vegetables and ginger. Harmful foods and substances include tobacco, alcohol, caffeine, fizzy drinks, trans fats, processed foods and sugar.

Another consideration for those wanting to know how to improve egg quality for IVF is whether or not to take nutritional supplements. There are a number now on the market which are specially designed for pre-natal use and you might want to ask your IVF doctor which she recommends.

How To Improve Egg Quality For IVF

Saturday, June 21, 2008

A supposed “pregnancy pact” at Gloucester High School in Gloucester, Massachusetts has drawn international attention to the small Massachusetts fishing city which is considered to be one of the oldest settlements (1623) in the American continent.

The story, which was broken by TIME magazine and the Boston Globe, involved the fact that 17 girls, all sixteen years old or younger, got themselves pregnant as part of a “pregnancy pact”, so that the teenage mothers could raise their babies together.

According the magazine article, school officials at the 1,162 student school became concerned starting as far back as October when a uncommonly large amount of girls began to enter the school’s health clinic to see if they were pregnant.

As of earlier this May, seven girls returned more than once seeking pregnancy tests and upon hearing results, “Some girls seemed more upset when they weren’t pregnant than when they were,” according to James Sullivan, the principal of the school. Some smiled, others cried, and one declared, “Sweet!”, according to the Globe upon hearing their results.

Local officials, including the mayor, are uncertain whether there really was a “pact”, however. Mayor Carolyn Kirk called it a “blip” in the pregnancy rate and noted many factors playing into it, such glamorization of teen pregnancy including the announcement around the same time that Britney Spear’s sister, Jamie Lynn Spears had given birth to a baby, and last year’s critically acclaimed movie, Juno, a comedy about a 16-year-old girl who gets pregnant and other movies, such as Knocked Up.

There is some concern over what might be statutory rape, as it has been reported that most of the men who are the fathers are older, including one report that one of the fathers is a 24-year-old homeless man. In Massachusetts, the age of consent is 16, therefore it is illegal for anyone to have sexual intercourse with anyone under 16.

Other teen mothers however have criticized the new mothers. Two such girls are Alivia Fidler and Meaghan Orlando, childhood friends and sophomore students at the high school, the girls were 16 years old when they became pregnant unexpectedly.

Orlando noted, “If I could go back in time I would want to wait and have the same baby later. You can’t do stuff that normal teens do,” who is now 17 and has a 3-month-old son named Jayden, “They don’t know what they’re getting themselves into.”

Meaghan’s friend, Alivia, also now 17, said the pact idea is “ridiculous.” Noting, “They’re not going to be friends very long. You have to take care of your baby. It’s frustrating. I don’t have a lot of support.” Fidler is no longer with the father of the baby, 5 month-old Xavier Fidler-Aguiar and recently lost her job at McDonalds.

One other teen mother, Amanda Ireland, who recently graduated from the school, also gave a warning to the mothers, “Don’t try to get pregnant. People say they know what it’s like because they have younger siblings, but they really have no idea.”

Ireland also noted, “They’re so excited to finally have someone to love them unconditionally. I try to explain it’s hard to feel loved when an infant is screaming to be fed at 3 a.m.”

46 year-old Gloucester resident Lori Mitchell, whose daughter dropped out of high school at 16 to raise a child said there are worse things than being a teenage mother, “They could be junkies or prostitutes. You try to protect them as much as you can, but it’s up to them to do the right thing.”

Greg Verga, the chairman of the Gloucester School Committee called the pact, “disturbing”, as he himself was once a teen father.

“They are going to have a rude awakening. It was no picnic. People don’t realize there’s 3 a.m. feedings … it’s a lifestyle change. It’s not a possession you can play with and stick on the shelf. That’s why I fear for these girls.”

I love these guys.

They spray a little paint and maybe break a vase and the cops are all over the media trying to make out like they’re the weathermen. They aren’t.

They are poor people who can’t afford airtime so they splash some paint to make us listen.

No one was hurt. It wasn’t a heinous crime.

What’s heinous is poor people made out as having no value to society. While they’re being starved out and ostracised by this messed up society that is more concerned about the paint used in this crime of poverty, and the value of the property underneath the paint.

Paint can be painted over. Humans in misery can’t.

oh, wait, right. This (BC) is the province where more than 20 hookers can disappear into a pig farm. Why should anyone notice them missing? They’re not people.

Once someone is poor they become a thing here. Not a human, a thing. –C.T.–

If you break the law, you pay the price. Period. A crime is a crime regarless of the ‘do gooder’ cause you may hide behind. Trying to drape yourself in a flag of moral superiority is pathetically transparent. 205.210.225.100 16:50, 6 March 2008 (UTC)

What exactly was the point of splattering paint all over the Premier’s office building? All it’s going to do is cost even more of their tax money to clean it up. –Kitch – (talk) 18:06, 23 February 2008 (UTC)

So is wikinews keeping people from posting comments? Then what’s the point of it? I have reentered my comment on this page 4 times. Everytime I return to the page, kirsch’ comment is there and mine is invisible. It seems fishy. Like a propoganda machine.

Australian Governor-General visits Wagga Wagga

   Posted by:    in Uncategorized

Wednesday, February 20, 2013

Wagga Wagga, New South Wales — Sunday, Governor-General of Australia, Quentin Bryce and her husband, Michael Bryce, visited the city of Wagga Wagga to launch the Junior Teams event and present the awards to the winners at the 2013 Allen’s Coaches World Championship Gumi, meet the North Wagga Wagga residents who were affected by the March 2012 floods and meet a small group of volunteers from the NSW RFS, SES and the VRA at a community barbecue at Wagga Beach.

After the Gumi presentations, Governor-General Bryce addressed the media about the Gumi, stating that “It’s so quirky and I love the way it brings this community together, this community that’s known for its fantastic spirit.” She also commented on the floods which affected the suburb of North Wagga in March 2012. Bryce stated that “A very special thing for me was being at North Wagga Wagga this morning, to see people again whom I meet almost a year ago after the devastation of the floods in that part of the city, […] So many people have a long way to recover but their spirit, resilience, courage and determination, what they’ve been though, is a source for inspiration to all of us.”

Archaeologist finds earliest tools used by non-human apes

   Posted by:    in Uncategorized

Wednesday, February 14, 2007

Archaeologist Julio Mercader at the University of Calgary has discovered hammer-like tools dating back 4300 years. The tools are thought to have been used by non-human primates to crack nuts.

The large size of the stones are of too great a weight to have been favoured as tools by humans. Further, humans are not believed to have been in that area at that time for the primates to have learned from them by observation.

Mercader suggests that this implies the primates learned to use the tools either independently of humans or else by a common ancestor (of common descent).

Further evidence supporting the hypothesis that the hammers were not used by humans includes that the nut residue on the tools are of nuts which were not regularly a part of a human diet.

Mercader elaborates in a prepared statement: “Some of the nuts require a compression force of more than a thousand kilograms to crack. And the idea is to crack the shell but not smash it — it’s not a simple technique.” [Editorial correction: force is a vector while mass is a scalar. By context, the force is approximately 10KN (10 KiloNewtons).]

Social and Political implications follow from the findings also. Anthropologist Agustín Fuentes (at Indiana’s University of Notre Dame) said, “It puts the nail in the coffin on those who say chimp tool use is atypical.”

This parallel of human evolution may also lead to further debate on the legal rights of primates.
